Training overview

This course equips participants with an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of human rights, the African human rights system, the evolution of the system, African human rights treaties and treaty bodies, the working methods, and opportunities for and challenges of engaging with the human rights system. 

Scope of training

This training topic includes the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, its Protocols and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, its working methods and special mechanisms, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, leadership structures, decision-making processes, engagement opportunities and challenges facing the African human rights system. 

Training aim

Upon successful completion of the training program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and explain the African human rights system’s evolution, rationale, principles, characteristics, structure and functioning.
  • Identify opportunities present within the African human rights system to advance human rights in Africa.
  • Prepare and submit reports to or present and defend communications before the treaty bodies within the African human rights system
  • Provide participants with strategies, skills and tools for effective engagement with the African human rights system.

Target audience

  • Anyone interested to know about, working on, working or interested in working with any of the treaty bodies within the African human rights system.
  • Government officials working in line ministries are responsible for submitting state party reports and appearing before the treaty bodies to defend complaints or make statements.
  • Corporate leaders interested in complying with the human rights norms within the African human rights system.
  • Civil society organisations interested in using working on or with treaty bodies within the African human rights system to promote human rights in their countries of operation. 

Training methodology

This training is learner centered. The facilitators use adult learning principles and techniques to enable maximum learning and knowledge retention. 

Training Content

The content of the training will include:

  • The African human rights system.
  • Norms, structures and standards within the African human rights system.
  • The composition, mandate and working methods of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
  • The state party reporting mechanisms.
  • Communication procedures
  • How to work with and through the human rights treaty bodies within the African human rights system.

Training Location

Participants can opt to receive the training virtually or in person. 

Cost of participation

The online pathway’s participation cost is $395 and $750 for the in-person pathway, excluding travel, accommodation and subsistence cost in South Africa.
